John Sez:
By John Harris, Belcaro Paint, Paint Chemist
This is the time of the year that can cause problems with painting outside. Cooler temperatures combined with higher humidity cause dew formation on all exterior surfaces. Dew, or any moisture on fresh latex paint causes some of the paint ingredients to move to the surface of the paint, resulting in discolored spots or streaks. Although this phenomenon, called surfactant leach, does not harm the paint, the appearance is not desirable. All paint manufacturers are challenged with surfactant leach and have been unable to stop it. The only sure way to avoid it is to wait for warmer days and nights to paint outside.
Also, at this time of year, we may see temperatures drop way too low to apply latex paint. The label on the paint can usually offers the minimum painting temperature. Remember, it is the temperature of the surface to be painted that should be measured, not the air temperature. The north side of a building may drop below freezing and although the air temperature may be comfortable, the building materials may retain the cold for many hours.
We have surface temperature thermometers available at both stores for $2.99 if you are concerned about painting a suspect surface.
Please let me know if you have any questions about paint or painting.
