John Sez:
Tips Using a Paint Brush
Almost every paint project requires using a paintbrush for at least some of the application. These tips should help when the brush is needed.
- Load up the brush by dipping it only halfway into the paint, not just the tips and not more than halfway up the filament or the brush will be difficult to clean. To prevent dripping, tap the brush lightly inside the can or bucket.
- Apply the paint with the tips of the brush, not the sides.
- The best way to paint is in small sections (about 2-foot square) at a time, overlapping each section slightly.
- After reloading the brush with paint, resume painting from an unpainted area and brush into fresh paint previously applied, so the sections blend together evenly.
- Long, smooth strokes are better than short choppy ones. As you finish each stroke, lift slightly toward the wet edge to help prevent brush marks.
- Do not apply the paint too thinly as that will reduce the hiding qualities of the paint. Refill the brush as soon as it begins to run dry.
- Freshly applied paint will try to “level” or become smooth. If you continue to brush as the water or solvent evaporates, the paint looses its ability to level. Work quickly. Avoid painting a hot surface and avoid painting in the direct rays of the sun.
- Practice your brushing technique in an inconspicuous area first, save the most obvious area for last as your technique will improve.
